Here are some ways you can still make the most out of your vacation.

1. Enjoy the beach- at a distance

Most public and some private beaches along the Georgia and South Carolina coast have re-opened for use so take advantage! Remember to always practice social distancing.

2. Get crafty

Most people have tried every new hobby in the book by now, but there are always new skills you can pick up from the comfort of your own home. Things like knitting, puzzles, and baking are simple ways of passing the time.

3. Earn some extra money

If you’re like me, it seems hard to find a job right now. But that doesn’t mean you can’t make one yourself! Services likes DoorDash, UberEats, and Postmates are a great way to make money on your own time.

4. Adopt a new friend

Quarantine can be super lonely, so why not rescue a furry friend? Keep in mind that adopting a pet is a HUGE responsibility and should not be taken lightly. But if you’ve been thinking about it for a while now is a great time to check your local animal shelter.

5. Keep in touch with friends and family

Times like this can certainly make us feel more lonely so don’t forget to check in on people you care about.

Don’t forget, always be safe and do what is best for you!

Tips on Taking Grad Pictures During Quarantine /tips-on-taking-grad-pictures-during-quarantine/ /tips-on-taking-grad-pictures-during-quarantine/#respond Wed, 29 Apr 2020 17:43:41 +0000 /?p=9035 Photos by Logan Seeman

As graduation season is coming up, we have to handle things a little differently like figuring out you’re going to celebrate virtual graduation or how you’re going to get your grad pics for your invitations. I know what you’re thinking: are grad pics even necessary now? In my opinion, they are.

Not only will they give you a little memory to look back on, but you can also use them for graduation invitation (or announcement cards) to send out to family and friends–they may even send you a little graduation gift.

Right now, it is difficult to get a whole photo shoot and outfit together when every store is closed and everyone is social distancing. So, here are some tips and tricks to get your grad pics during the quarantine.

1) Shop for your outfit online

Finding an outfit is especially hard since all the stores are closed, so we have to do the next best thing. Shop online! Many online stores are offering either some type of discount or free shipping due to everything going on. Also, you can still shop at your favorite local stores. If you are still in Statesboro, you can order clothes online from the boutiques and pick them up at the store to save yourself from shipping fees. Also, I know many don’t have a graduation robe to take pictures, so it’s time to finesse it. Use your high school robe, just the cap or even order one off of amazon!

Here are some of my favorite online shops to check out:

-Shein: https://us.shein.com/

-Zaful: https://www.zaful.com/

-Boohoo: https://us.boohoo.com/

-Pretty Little Things: https://www.prettylittlething.us/

-Princess Polly: https://us.princesspolly.com/

-Lulu’s: https://www.lulus.com/

2) Finding a photographer

You can still have your pictures taken while following social distancing guidelines. Finding someone at this time could be hard, so if your friend or parent has a nice camera (or even a phone with a good camera), see if they can take them for you! There are also a lot of student photographers that would love your business too! Just make sure it is six feet apart.

Note: There are also thousands of editing apps for photos that can help you get the best quality photograph you’re looking for

3) Finding your location

Photos by Logan Seeman

If you are still in Statesboro, you can just take a trip to campus and get your photos done there. My advice is to take them in Sweetheart Circle because it provides beautiful greenery background, and you can get a picture in from of the GSU shrubs. Try taking your photos around 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to get the perfect golden lighting.

If you aren’t in Statesboro, there are still options out there. Scope out your hometown for a unique background. Check your downtown area or, if you live out in the country, you can find some nature spots for a background!

4) Making your invitation/announcement card

Created on Shutterfly

Once you have your photos, you may need a card to display them on to send to your family and friends. Lucky for you, there are a handful of websites you can make them on for a reasonable price.

-CVS Photos: https://www.cvs.com/photo/photo-landing

-Paperless Post: https://www.paperlesspost.com/

-Paper Culture: https://www.paperculture.com/

-Shutterfly: https://www.shutterfly.com/

5) Have fun with it

Photos by Logan Seeman

Don’t stress over this too much. Even though it may not feel like it, this is a celebratory time––have fun with it!

Hopefully, these tips were helpful and can help you guide through your graduation pictures with more ease. I know these times are hard, but going out and taking some grad pictures and sending out announcements can bring a little bit of normalcy to this chaotic time.

The Psychology of Panic Buying: Here’s Why Everyone Is Buying All the Toilet Paper /the-psychology-of-panic-buying-heres-why-everyone-is-buying-all-the-toilet-paper/ /the-psychology-of-panic-buying-heres-why-everyone-is-buying-all-the-toilet-paper/#respond Tue, 28 Apr 2020 16:00:49 +0000 /?p=9019 Empty shelves. We’ve all seen them the past few weeks as coronavirus-induced panic rose and social distancing became the new normal. We’ve all gone searching for that necessary item or food, only to find it’s out of stock. Toilet paper is one of the hardest commodities to get your hands on these days.

As more grocery chains, such as Kroger and Publix, implement new limits on how much of an item you can buy at one time, hopefully this situation will grow more manageable. There is also an increase in delivery services offered. Whether or not stores set limits, though, depends on the state.

Panic buying is not a new phenomenon. When there is snow in the South, for instance, people stock up on bread, milk and eggs. In places like Florida, it’s practically an annual occurrence due to hurricane season. However, unlike a hurricane, there is not a definite end in sight, and this affects the entire globe.

Let’s take a closer look at what panic buying is and potential reasons behind it.

What do we mean by “panic buying”?

In an email, Elmira Shahriari, Ph.D and Georgia Southern assistant professor of marketing, defined panic buying as “when a large number of consumers buy a product(s) in larger than normal quantities because of a belief the item will become scarce or increase in price.”

Something Shahriari also pointed out is that panic buying occurs with shortages or perceived shortages of a product.

Reasons behind panic buying might include wanting to minimize risk, people being driven by their emotions and feeling a sense of relief and control when hoarding, according to PsychCentral.

But why toilet paper?

Shariari said that obvious purchases were non-perishable food items, such as canned/dried food, as well as more pandemic-specific preparations, such as bottled water, cleaning supplies and hand sanitizer.

Toilet paper doesn’t fall into either category. So why did it become one of the most sold-out items?

“American consumers heard about toilet paper shortages in other countries that were affected earlier by the coronavirus,” Shahriari said. “When it was our turn to do our pandemic shopping, we knew we [needed] to stock up.”

She also talked about the role herd mentality may have played in panic buying all the toilet paper.

“While toilet paper is something consumers must have for weeks/months of self-quarantine, it is our herd mentality that led to the many YouTube videos we have seen of people buying toilet paper in mass,” Shahriari said. “These videos, and news stories on the TP shortages, elicited a self-fulfilling prophecy.”

Shahriari pointed toward social media as increasing this perceived shortage and need.

“Seeing Facebook pictures and Instagram stories of the long lines at grocery stores or the empty shelves and aisles at the supermarkets compel consumers to pile up on necessities before they run out,” Shahriari said.

What are the problems with panic buying?

Aside from generating more panic, this type of consumer behavior affects the economy and supply chain.

Shahriari said that in this situation, suppliers are struggling to get the products back on the shelves as quickly as possible. In addition, she said that, in order to stay competitive, agile suppliers need to use data and develop models to forecast how the consumers’ purchase behavior will shift in the following weeks or months.

The pandemic is changing suppliers’ predictions about what consumers will need or want in the future.

“By incorporating data into the systems and analyzing models, we can also anticipate the next wave of consumers’ needed products,” Shahriari said. “For instance, recent research shows that consumer demand for hair color kits have significantly increased since people cannot go to salons due to the stay at home orders.”

Shortages can also lead to serious problems, according to Shahriari. She personally saw a post on Nextdoor asking if anyone had isopropyl alcohol to share, with the writer stating that they needed to sterilize the needles for her granddaughter’s insulin shots. Fortunately, many commenters quickly offered donations and alternative cleaning methods, said Shahriari.

Will placing limitations help the situation?

It’s not just toilet paper or essential items that have limits on how much one person can buy. Shahriari said that it’s notable that Apple Inc. has applied purchase limits on its products.

Placing limits on what consumers are able to buy in-store, from Shahriari’s point of view, has both pros and cons.

“On the one hand, it can decrease the overall consumer stress by increasing the availability of the in-demand items; on the other hand, it may create chaos by not providing clear instructions for the consumers about why the limits are in place or how some other shoppers get around the restrictions,” Shahriari said. “Further, having to make additional trips to the store increases contact with others, thereby increasing the risk of spreading COVID-19.”

What can everyday people do to help the situation?

Shahriari said that, like the Nextdoor community offering assistance to the grandmother, Americans must work together in this time of need.

“Thinking about others when making purchases is only part of the sacrifices we must continue to make during this pandemic,” Shahriari said. “Those sacrifices include staying at home so that we can flatten the curve.”

5 tips to stay motivated during online classes /5-tips-to-stay-motivated-during-online-classes/ /5-tips-to-stay-motivated-during-online-classes/#respond Mon, 27 Apr 2020 18:00:03 +0000 /?p=9012 With the semester gradually coming to an end, I think many of us are also slowly feeling burnt out. I know I am, and working from my bedroom definitely is not helping. It’s easy to become unmotivated and less eager to get work done, but here are a few tips that should keep you going until the sweet release of summer.

Scheduling

One of the most important things I found that have helped me in my online classes is setting aside designated time to work on my assignments. One of the benefits of working from home is that you can work whenever you feel most comfortable–in the middle of the night with Netflix playing in the background or in the early morning with your favorite hot beverage next to you. Whichever works, be sure to remain consistent, and you’ll find yourself more motivated to work.

To-Do List

To-do lists. One of my personal favorites. Trying to remember what assignment is due can become very chaotic, especially when you aren’t in the classroom. Something I find most useful is making a list every week with all my assignments and their due dates. It doesn’t have to be complex or fancy. It can be as simple as a scratch piece of paper or a day-by-day planner.

With all of your work organized in one place, you’ll be more likely to complete it and turn it on time.

Workspace

When you are comfortable in where you work, you are more likely to succeed and be motivated. What’s great about online classes is that you are able to work on your own time and in an environment where you are most likely to thrive. This means being able to watch your favorite shows (if that’s how you focus), listen to your favorite tunes or work in absolute silence.

Click here for tips on the perfect at-home workspace.

Limiting Distractions

One of the obvious. Limit those distractions! Try placing your phone out of arms’ reach, closing your door to block outside noise or even turning off your computer’s Wi-Fi so you are less tempted to check your Twitter. We all know how easy that minute can turn into an hour.

Visualizing Success

This too shall pass.

Online classes aren’t forever and while it may seem that way, the end of the semester is only a few short weeks away. Something that always keeps me going is visualizing success and the things I’ll be able to do once it all passes. (Hint, hint, sleeping in!)

While you may struggle now, think about how you’ll feel later. Staying motivated will have been worth it.

Scheduling Tips: How to Make the Most Out of Your Semester /scheduling-tips-how-to-make-the-most-out-of-your-semester/ /scheduling-tips-how-to-make-the-most-out-of-your-semester/#respond Thu, 23 Apr 2020 20:04:13 +0000 /?p=8996 College can be a very stressful time and having to figure out what classes work best for you can be a huge part of that. We want to help. Here are some insider tips on how to make the most out of a day at Georgia Southern.

  1. Listen to your advisor!

Your academic advisor is there for you. They will know what is best for you and what the best courses will be for you to take your freshman year. Don’t be afraid to ask for a meeting with them outside of the required ones! The academic advisors at GS are amazing at their job, and they are more than happy to help.

  1. Give yourself AT LEAST 15 minutes between classes.

It takes roughly 15 minutes to get from one side of campus to the other while walking.

The buses can be a good option, but there is no telling if they’ll be at the right place at the perfect time for you.

  1. Make time for breaks.

Some people prefer back-to-back classes to get them all out of the way earlier, but it is still important to squeeze some time in for little breaks here and there. Schedule some time for lunch as well so that you can run into Lakeside or Starbucks and grab something to eat to give your brain the fuel it needs! if you have an one+ hour break, the fourth floor of the library is a great place to “rest your eyes” (but you didn’t hear it from me).

  1. Do your research.

The typical course load of a freshmen includes the CORE classes, such as Composition, Biology and History. This doesn’t mean you don’t have to do any research! Ratemyprofessor.com is a great website to get some insight on a professor’s teaching style to see if it would be a good match for you. Take the ratings with a grain of salt though since students tend to leave bad ones more often than good ones.

  1. Register on time.

Classes fill up fast in college, that’s for sure. Always register for classes the second your registration time opens because classes fill up fast.

College means coming into a whole new world and something as small as picking classes can be a scary thing to conquer. Hopefully, this inside scoop can help you make the most out of your time at college!

Finding the Perfect At-Home Workspace /finding-the-perfect-at-home-workspace/ /finding-the-perfect-at-home-workspace/#respond Tue, 21 Apr 2020 17:07:52 +0000 /?p=8946 While many of us may or may not have expected it, we are officially switching to full-time online classes. There can be an endless debate on its benefits, drawbacks and effects on both students and faculty, but for the safety of everyone, we are at this point. Regardless of where you stand, working from home doesn’t have to be the worse thing. Creating a workspace where you are comfortable, inspired and motivated is going to be one of the best things you can do. Here are some key tips to build your perfect at-home workspace.

Location

Finding the optimum space in your home is ultimately the first step. And depending on your household size, this can vary from an actual home office to the tiniest part left in your bedroom. There is no right or wrong spot. It’s what works best for you.

Limit Distractions

Distractions are all around us, from our TVs to our phones or even our family. Your workspace should be free of any of those temptations. When you are in your work mode, try placing your phone in another room, so you aren’t tempted to grab it. This can work the same with your TV remote.

Light

Lighting is another important factor. When we are exposed to more sunlight, our cognitive function is better, according to Environmental Health, a medical journal. Try shifting your desk or space in front of an open window.

Supplies

No matter where you find your perfect setting, it should always be filled with the essentials such as your computer, paper for notes, writing utensils and a planner. Having to take a break and hunt for tools can hinder you from working efficiently.

Design

Your workspace doesn’t have to be fancy or overly dramatic. But, if you are a fan of the aesthetic, adding your favorite decor can help you stay focused and actually want to work.

Comfortable clothes

Although this doesn’t directly pertain to your workspace, it is a key factor in your success rate. Many schools or businesses require dress codes that can be uncomfortable to work in. A benefit from working from home is there isn’t a strict set of rules you have to follow. You can dress up or dress down as you please.

Here are a few workspaces from GS students and professors who sent in their photos via Twitter using #DailyDesk.

Mary Grace Ducey (@naciemew), English major, via Twitter.

Katelyn Coggins (@kacoggins), lecturer of mathematics, via Twitter.

Professor Jennifer Furlong (@speechteach912), communications instructor, via Twitter.

No matter where you find yourself working, it is important to create that barrier from your relaxing space to your workspace. That way there is a designated area only for work, and you will be more likely to function proficiently.

Tweet us your at-home workspace with the hashtag #DailyDesk!

GS Resources for Online Classes /gs-resources-for-online-classes/ /gs-resources-for-online-classes/#respond Wed, 15 Apr 2020 13:00:00 +0000 /?p=8899 As we switch to online classes, the struggle of finding accessible software can truly take a toll on our academics. However, we live in a world where technology is heavily prevalent, and, no matter what your situation is, there is some feature out there that you can gain access to. Here are a few tools available to Georgia Southern students at no cost to you.

Software Downloads

GS offers free downloads for a variety of resources, such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Cloud. If you log on to your MyGeorgiaSouthern and scroll till you reach the section titled Technology Resources and click Download Software, you can get free access to a series of different computer software.

eBooks

While you can’t physically check out books, eBooks are still an option! Under the section titled Library Resources on MyGeorgiaSouthern gives you a list of appropriate links.

Virtual Tutoring

The Academic Success Center has moved entirely online but is still readily accessible. Virtual tutoring is here to offer services such as economics, foreign languages and engineering. You can schedule an appointment here!

Internet Access

If you are housed locally near Georgia Southern and is in need of internet access or a computer then you can make an appointment at Henderson Library here.

Video Chat

Social distancing doesn’t mean you can’t see your friends! Still wanting to set up that study group, you can try Google Hangouts Meet or Zoom. Both are free, accessible software where you are able to still get “face-to-face” contact.

While online classes may not seem the most ideal, they can still be very efficient when we have access to the right tools.

Making Money While Social Distancing /making-money-while-social-distancing/ /making-money-while-social-distancing/#respond Tue, 14 Apr 2020 13:00:00 +0000 /?p=8883 These are unknown times for all of us. Many people have lost their source of income due to either losing their job or their family losing their job because they are nonessential. If you are looking for ways to make some extra money, here are some suggestions on ways to make a little extra money during COVID-19 social distancing.

Online Survey Taker

We all have seen those advertisements where people say they made one hundred dollars just by taking quizzes online. These claims are true, although you probably will not make that much just starting off. This is a good idea if you do not have very much time but are still looking for ways to make money. Here are some of the better paying websites, according to Consumers Advocate:

  1. Survey Junkie
  2. Branded Surveys
  3. Inbox Dollars

Tutor

Whether you realized it or not, you can tutor virtually. There is a demand for tutors now due to schools closing for the rest of the year. Many parents are worried that their child will fall behind, and they are looking for people to help them ensure that their kids are keeping on track for next year. You could do it over phone calls or video chat for an hour or two a day. Not only will you be helping others, but you will also be making money.

Food Delivery

Yes, we are supposed to be social distancing, but there is still a demand for food that we do not have to cook ourselves. Restaurants are in need of delivery drivers due to people not getting out as much. There is DoorDash, UberEats, as well as restaurants that are providing their own personal delivery services.

Grocery Delivery

Similarly, grocery delivery is in high demand as well. Many people cannot leave their place of residence, so they have no way to get groceries. You would grocery shop and then deliver the groceries to their doorstep.

“Etsy” Seller

Because we can not leave our houses right now, many people are picking up hobbies. Say you pick up crocheting–you could crochet a blanket and sell it. I am positive these goods will be bought because some people are suckers for handmade goods in opposition to factory made goods.

There are a few ways to make a little extra money during this time of social distancing. Not only is this applicable for social distancing, but also when all of this is over, these jobs will still be in demand.

Here’s everything you need to know about Tinder’s Passport feature /heres-everything-you-need-to-know-about-tinders-passport-feature/ /heres-everything-you-need-to-know-about-tinders-passport-feature/#respond Mon, 13 Apr 2020 18:29:08 +0000 /?p=8894 Being quarantined during this time can be difficult, especially when it comes to not being able to interact with others. Tinder wants to help with that. For the month of April, the Passport feature on Tinder will be free for everyone.

At the beginning of April, Tinder released this statement under the “Passport” section on its website: “A message for our community: In these trying times, while we all know we need to stay home, this doesn’t mean we have to be alone with our thoughts. Having someone to talk to can make a world of difference. And that’s why we decided that starting this week we’ll make our Passport feature, free to everyone, everywhere.”

If you are planning to take advantage of this feature, here is everything you need to know:

1. It’s free

From now through April 30, Tinder has made its Passport feature free. This is normally a feature you can only get on Tinder Plus & Gold subscriptions.

Make sure that your app is on the latest update to get the passport feature for no cost.

2. How to Change your location

Go to settings – Location (under “discovery”) – Add a new location – Search (put in your new location)

3. You can travel anywhere in the world

Visit France, New York, Italy or even your college hometown. There’s no limit to how many places you can visit, so use your (virtual) passport and go crazy!

“People you’ve liked while using the Passport feature may see your profile up to 24 hours after you’ve changed your location(s),” according to Tinder

Note: You can only visit one place at a time

4. This is your chance to practice the languages you’ve been learning in your classes

Did you spend three years learning Spanish in high school? Have you taken six credit hours of French in college? Now is the time to put these skills to the test and interact with people from different countries.

5. It may be a good idea to put your home country in your bio

As you travel to different countries, it’s a good idea to let others know where you’re from, whether through a flag emoji of your home country, a comment like “I’m trying to practice my French. Will you help me out?”, or just telling them straight up that you’re from [insert country]. This may help when going to foreign locations and trying to communicate via Google Translate.

6. Reconnect with people from your college town or hometown

Many people have gone home to be with family, while others have stayed in their college town. Whichever one of these situations you are in, it’s likely that you’re missing the other. With the Passport feature, however, you’re able to reconnect with people in the places you call home.

7. Talk to others who are going through the same thing

This pandemic is affecting everyone, everywhere. Having someone to talk to about it during this difficult time can make you feel less alone.

What are you waiting for? Take your virtual passport and travel to all the places you’ve been dreaming of going–at no cost to you!

Doing School Work From Home: Tips to Help You Succeed /doing-school-work-from-home-tips-to-help-you-succeed/ /doing-school-work-from-home-tips-to-help-you-succeed/#respond Fri, 10 Apr 2020 18:41:13 +0000 /?p=8874 College students across world have suddenly had their daily schedule thrown through a loop due to COVID-19 recently. With classes for the remainder of the Spring 2020 term and Summer 2020 going digital for GS, it can be hard to learn new study and work habits. These are some tips to make the transition a little easier for you.

1. Get a good night’s sleep

First and foremost, sleep. Being sent home from campus can feel like you are on an earlier summer break, so you might tend to stay up later and in turn wake up past noon. Personally, I am trying to break the habit of staying up until four a.m. every night watching “Criminal Minds.” If you are already in the habit of staying up through the night, try and force yourself to wake up and stay up a little earlier every day. And waking up and lounging in bed for hours doesn’t count! Go eat some breakfast, take a shower or even go for a morning walk/jog.

2. Find a time that works best for you

Everyone has different study techniques and only you can know what works best for you. Some night owls tend to crack open the books during the night so that leaves their day for doing whatever they want, while others might be the opposite. Choose the time of day/night where you have the highest energy level and when you feel the most productive. Don’t study right after you wake up or right before you’re about to go to sleep. Give your brain time to chill!

3. Separate work from play

One of the “cardinal rules” of studying at home is to never study in your bed! Try and find a space in your house, like the kitchen table or a desk, to study. It’s best to reserve your bed for only sleeping because it can be easy to fall into a nap if you are somewhere comfortable.

4. Give yourself breaks

No one can study for eight hours straight and remain sane after. It’s important to give yourself breaks so you can give your brain time to recharge a little. But it is also important to limit the length of the breaks and how frequently you take them. You can divide the time and frequency differently according to your own personal study habits, but don’t pull the age old trick of “Well, the end time for my break is already past so I’ll just put it off a little while longer.”

5. Use online resources

It’s easy to feel cut off from the world when you have suddenly become an online student, but GS has provided online resources you can access via your MyGeorgiaSouthern page. Beside those there are endless other ways to vary the ways you study. YouTube videos, such as CrashCourse, can help you summarize subjects that go into college-level detail.

It may take a while to jump back into a school schedule due to COVID-19, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to! These tips can help you get back on track and to make to the most out of a bad situation.
