As graduation season is coming up, we have to handle things a little differently like figuring out you’re going to celebrate virtual graduation or how you’re going to get your grad pics for your invitations. I know what you’re thinking: are grad pics even necessary now? In my opinion, they are.
Not only will they give you a little memory to look back on, but you can also use them for graduation invitation (or announcement cards) to send out to family and friends–they may even send you a little graduation gift.
Right now, it is difficult to get a whole photo shoot and outfit together when every store is closed and everyone is social distancing. So, here are some tips and tricks to get your grad pics during the quarantine.
Finding an outfit is especially hard since all the stores are closed, so we have to do the next best thing. Shop online! Many online stores are offering either some type of discount or free shipping due to everything going on. Also, you can still shop at your favorite local stores. If you are still in Statesboro, you can order clothes online from the boutiques and pick them up at the store to save yourself from shipping fees. Also, I know many don’t have a graduation robe to take pictures, so it’s time to finesse it. Use your high school robe, just the cap or even order one off of amazon!
Here are some of my favorite online shops to check out:
-Shein: https://us.shein.com/
-Zaful: https://www.zaful.com/
-Boohoo: https://us.boohoo.com/
-Pretty Little Things: https://www.prettylittlething.us/
-Princess Polly: https://us.princesspolly.com/
-Lulu’s: https://www.lulus.com/
You can still have your pictures taken while following social distancing guidelines. Finding someone at this time could be hard, so if your friend or parent has a nice camera (or even a phone with a good camera), see if they can take them for you! There are also a lot of student photographers that would love your business too! Just make sure it is six feet apart.
Note: There are also thousands of editing apps for photos that can help you get the best quality photograph you’re looking for
If you are still in Statesboro, you can just take a trip to campus and get your photos done there. My advice is to take them in Sweetheart Circle because it provides beautiful greenery background, and you can get a picture in from of the GSU shrubs. Try taking your photos around 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to get the perfect golden lighting.
If you aren’t in Statesboro, there are still options out there. Scope out your hometown for a unique background. Check your downtown area or, if you live out in the country, you can find some nature spots for a background!
Once you have your photos, you may need a card to display them on to send to your family and friends. Lucky for you, there are a handful of websites you can make them on for a reasonable price.
-CVS Photos: https://www.cvs.com/photo/photo-landing
-Paperless Post: https://www.paperlesspost.com/
-Cards and Pockets: https://www.cardsandpockets.com/
-Paper Culture: https://www.paperculture.com/
-Shutterfly: https://www.shutterfly.com/
-Snapfish: https://www.snapfish.com/home
Don’t stress over this too much. Even though it may not feel like it, this is a celebratory time––have fun with it!
Hopefully, these tips were helpful and can help you guide through your graduation pictures with more ease. I know these times are hard, but going out and taking some grad pictures and sending out announcements can bring a little bit of normalcy to this chaotic time.

]]>As students began to readjust to this new reality, many student workers were left wondering where they stand now with their jobs and if they should start looking for another line of work.
The university has kept the student workers in mind during this time of transition. Students who could work remotely from home were able to continue work, but if that was not a possibility, they would find reassignment for those who needed the work hours.
Ben Phillips, who is the Coordinator of Leadership Development in the Office of Leadership and Community Engagement, was selected to work and take over this project from human resources. It is his job to match students with new temporary assignments.
There are still 77 students waiting to be reassigned as of April 12. Phillips states this is due to a disproportionate amount of students needing work, and departments needing additional assistance.
Phillips has said so far his team has, “helped 97 students find temporary student worker assignments for the rest of the semester, across both the Statesboro and Armstrong campuses.”
Kayla McCook, who worked at the on-campus Starbucks, was one of the lucky students who were able to be reassigned.
When campus closed and I wasn’t able to work anymore, I was so stressed out and upset. I was excited to hear the news of being reassigned, working at a whole new place on campus.
Kayla McCook
McCook was reassigned to the grounds departments where she helps with the upkeep of the campus, doing things like planting trees. She says it’s a lot different than what she is used to at Starbucks but is thankful for this new experience.
Shay Heard is among the student workers who are able to work from home during this time. Heard works as a student assistant in the Office of Leadership and Community Engagement and was surprised to hear that she was able to keep her job.
Heard said, “I’m still getting the same amount of hours, thankfully. We are now doing everything online, of course, from checking emails to doing project requests for people in the office.”
Rebecca Cortner, a work-study student who works in the office of testing services as a proctor for online exams, said the worst part during this time was trying to figure out if she was going to be paid the same amount of money she was awarded or if she needed to find a job in the midst of places already laying off workers.”
Cortner explained the university had set aside a certain amount of money for the semester that she will continue to receive weekly. She is still able to keep her job even though the campus is closed. Cortner was given the option to proctor exams, which she assumes will take place via webcam.
A GS student employee who works at Lakeside dining commons, who wishes to remain anonymous, is one of the student workers who are still without work. In fact, the student did not even know there was a reassignment process for student workers until the interview.
I received no emails from any of my managers or even Eagle Dining Services about student workers staying home or any other type of information about reassigning us to a new department if possible. No one reached out or gave us any type of instruction on handling the situation. Even now, I have yet to receive any emails from my department.
A GS student employee who works at Lakeside dining commons
Phillips stated that students needing temporary work were supposed to have been sent forms from them that ask students to identify their home department, normal working hours, and some of the interests and skills that they have. The departments as well can share this information and form.
“It is hard to say exactly what might have happened with this particular student. One of our largest groups of students that have applied for temporary assignments has been students from the Dining Commons. It seems like it was an unfortunate oversight for this particular student,” said Phillips
Phillips also said if any students have any questions about anything or would like to communicate with him that he is open anytime, and would love to hear from them and do his best to advocate for them.
Though a lot of uncertainty is going around, the university is trying its best in helping students continue work has helped ease their stress.
“I’m thankful that I work for such a great university that amidst all of the chaos can find us a place to work, ” McCook said.
If you’re a student worker still in need of work and reassignment you can reach out to Ben Phillips @[email protected] for help.

]]>After hearing about how bizarre this series was from not just my friends but also my family and pretty much the whole internet, I decided to give it a watch. Within the first five minutes of the first episode, I was transported to a world of mullets, animal activism, polyamorous relationships and of course tigers.
The series is centered around a group of tiger owners/collectors, mainly focusing on the rise and fall of Joe Exotic. While the series does mainly follow Joe, it also takes a look at his other competitors and how they compete against one another.
While it was an interesting look into the life of Joe Exotic’s journey from running for governor and president to him ending up in prison, it also closely follows his biggest competitor Carol Baskins.
By now you have probably heard of the infamous Carol Baskins, but if you haven’t I’ll save you the spoiler on why she is. Baskins is Exotics’ biggest competitor and he does the most bizarre thing to wreck her reputation.
While his tricks and antics are funny and entertaining to watch, it is also one of the shows fatal flaws in my opinion. The series, maybe not intending to do this, made it feel like Carol was the main and only antagonist of the show.
Truth be told, no one in this series is a good person. In my opinion, they’re all attention driven, money-hungry people. The fact that Carol is seen as the only negative person in this series is upsetting.
Another flaw that I noticed was how I felt Netflix really glazed over the animal abuse in this series. There were a lot of upsetting actions that took place within the show that I felt were glossed over and not focused on.
At the end of the day, it is an exciting docu-series. This is the kind of series that will have you accidentally watch the whole thing in one sitting without you realizing. If you haven’t seen the madness and mayhem that is “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness” then I recommend you watch it. It might just take your mind off the madness and mayhem going on in the world right now.
]]>First up to meet the parents was Hannah Ann.
All Hannah Ann wants to do is just tell and let Peter’s family know how much she loves him. She immediately starts crying as soon as she meets his whole family and won’t stop gushing about how much she loves him.
Peter’s mother Barbra (Barb) is eating that up. When Barb and Hannah Ann go off to talk one-on-one, Hannah Anne lets Barb know how much she loves Peter. That’s pretty much all they talked about.
Peter expresses to his family that Hannah Ann has been ride or die for him the whole time, but he is still conflicted with his decision between Hannah Ann and Madison. His family doesn’t understand his dilemma because they believe Hannah Ann is all that and a bag of chips. I get it. Hannah Ann has proven to be the most loyal and unconditionally loving towards him, which is all they want for Peter.
Let me preface their meeting by saying that, before Madison even got there, the only thing Peter told his family about Madison was her ultimatum (that Madison claims was not an ultimatum). Remember when she told Peter that she couldn’t continue on with him if he was intimate with other girls?
So now Madison has to meet his family with them only knowing that about her, and, of course, the family is now going to grill her through their whole meeting.
They question Madison on her and Peter’s compatibility since they have two completely different lifestyles, asking how much are they really wanting to compromise for each other.
Needless to say, this meeting did not go as well as Hannah Ann’s because afterward, when Peter was talking to his family about the girls, they were all still team Hannah Ann.
This is when we finally see who Barb is crying over in her infamous “Don’t let her go. Bring her home.” Barb was crying over Hannah Ann! Not much a shocker after Madison’s meeting with them.
For their final one-on-one, Peter takes Madison on a helicopter ride and then, of course, talks about where they stand after that really bad family meeting.
Madison tells Peter that she’s been fighting for him since day one, but maybe it is time for her to just surrender and send herself home. I get why she did it. There’s much more to a relationship than just a spark.
Madison sending herself home wrecks Peter. Peter is so upset that they have to bring Chris Harrison to check on Peter to see if he can even bring himself to go on his final date with Hannah Ann. Peter eventually manages to pull himself together to go.
Peter takes Hannah Ann to go hang out with baby kangaroos, and then, of course, to have dinner and talk.
Peter doesn’t tell Hannah Ann that Madison self-eliminated herself, but he does thank her for being so supportive and selfless throughout this whole process.
One thing Peter hasn’t done to Hannah Ann is reciprocate the same love she has for him. This is all she wants from him, but he tells her to give him time and to trust him.
Now we finally get to see Peter propose to his (supposedly) true love Hannah-Ann. Even though he hasn’t even told Hannah Ann that he loves her yet, Peter proposes anyways. Hannah-Ann is surprised and overjoyed by his proposal and obviously says yes.
I honestly don’t know who is happier, Barb or Hannah?
Unfortunately, this love train doesn’t last long. A month after their engagement Peter has Hannah Ann over to talk. Hannah Ann can sense something is off and that is when Peter tells her that he doesn’t think he can truly give his whole heart to her.
Hannah Ann did not take this well, as no one woman whose engagement is being broken should. She tells him that he took away her first engagement and storms out.
After watching Hannah Ann’s and Peter’s engagement crumble, we are brought back to Peter sitting solemnly on a stage with Chris Harrison in front of a studio audience (including his whole family).
Chris invites Hannah Ann on stage for them to have one last pow wow, and Hannah Ann lets Peter have it. She pretty much just goes off on Peter about he shouldn’t have even proposed if he knew he couldn’t love her the way she loved him. Hannah Ann even revealed that she should’ve broken things off with Peter when he wanted clarity from Hannah Brown.
Yes, Hannah Brown.
Hannah Anne gets her final words into Peter, telling him how he is a coward for never admitting his feelings and leading her on. Power to Hannah Ann.
After Hannah Ann leaves the stage, they show what happens next in Peter’s journey.
On the big screen, it shows Chris Harrison having a meeting with Madison. Yes, Madison! He tells Madison that Peter and Hannah Ann and have broken off their engagement. What does Madison do with this information? She takes it and runs with it, all the way back to Peter.
Where does it leave the two? Well on the stage in front of everyone at the finale. The two never disclose technically where they’re at with their relationship, but I think they are together. What we do know is that Barb is not happy with this relationship.
Barb and Madison get into it with each other, and Peter comes to the rescue by saying that he loves her and that should be enough. That is where this season of “The Bachelor” leaves us. It kind of left us all on a cliffhanger with what is technically going on with everyone.
Two days after the live finale, Madison and Peter both released that both of them have decided to part ways. Honestly, I saw this coming, but I didn’t see it coming this fast.
With that, this concludes this season’s Bachelor Recap!
]]>As the number of people affected by COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) increases across the nation, the city of Statesboro is taking steps to keep the community safe and to slow the spread. In a town hall meeting on Sunday, March 22, Statesboro Mayor Jonathan McCollar brought forward an executive order.
The executive order called for businesses to close and prohibited gatherings larger than 10 people. This did exclude some businesses such as grocery stores, some restaurants, hospitals, doctors’ offices and some retail stores.
This executive order is to last 15 days and will be revisited at the end of this period. With this executive order in place, it means many local businesses are having to close their doors because they are deemed “non-essential.” However, these businesses are still finding ways to keep business going.
Local retail stores such as Dish, Stella, Cheeky Bliss and Sole have had to close their stores. Each store has gone completely online for the time being, but many of them are offering free shipping on orders and curbside pickup.
They are also all remaining active on their social media accounts and are allowing people to order off of them as well. These stores are also offering discounts on orders!
Restaurants are also feeling the effects of COVID-19, and the executive order as they are also having to close their lobby area. Local restaurants are also finding ways to continue to serve customers in the safest way.
Local coffee shop Three Tree Coffee Roasters had to be creative with their ways to continue to serve the community their coffee. They have created a local delivery service on select items as well as online ordering through the app Cloosive for curbside pickup.
Three Tree Coffee Roasters have also shifted their Saturday Brunch to their trolley. You can now order brunch and drink orders at the trolley, with your order being brought straight to your car.
Founder and Owner of Three Tree Coffee Roasters Phillip Klayman said that there has clearly been a drop in sales across the board, but it has been so cool to see the community’s support and response to their efforts.
Greg Filipek, the manager of Bites on Brampton, said Bites is taking extra health and safety precautions during this time to ensure the staff’s safety and the customer’s safety. They have reduced the staff and are allowing only three people in the lobby at once to ensure everyone will have six feet of space.
Filipek said, “We’re just going to keep it going forward with the business, but really focus on providing a safe environment for customers.”
Like Bites and Three Tree Coffee Roasters, other local restaurants are offering curbside pickup and even delivery. Restaurants that serve alcohol like Gnats Landing and Del Sur are authorized to sell alcoholic beverages during this time.
Filipek says Bites are lucky that they are able to stay open when so many other businesses have not been as fortunate.
“It has affected business for us since we have such a young customer base and a lot of the students have gone home for the semester,” Filipek said.
This time has put a strain on all local businesses, and each will be hit with some kind of economic hardship. In this time of difficulties and uncertainties, it has raised the importance to continue to support locally owned businesses.
Filipek said, ” The best thing to do right now is to support local and family-owned businesses, but do so in the safest way possible.”

]]>Carole Levin, a professor at the University of Nebraska and author of various books about Queen Elizabeth I, was the guest lecturer at the event. Levin used the history of Queen Elizabeth I’s life and journey to power as an influence on the question of can women rule?
Before delving into the life of Queen Elizabeth I, Levin discussed women who have recently run for positions of power. This included women from Victoria Woodhull, the first women to run for president, to Hilary Clinton, the first women to run for a major party.
Levin took the audience on a journey through Elizabeth I life to give a better explanation of how she became and remained a strong ruler. Levin explained Elizabeth knew as a young girl that having her voice heard would not be easy, especially since her father, King Henry VIII, was convinced women cannot rule.
In Elizabeth’s era, it was the firstborn son who was first in line to the throne. This would mean that she would be third in line behind her younger brother and older sister. Elizabeth rose to power after the death of her siblings.
Elizabeth’s reign lasted 45 years and can be defined as was one of the greatest rulers and reigns. She did this by working for what’s best for her people. Elizabeth never married or had kids but instead said that she wed her kingdom and was the mother to her people.
Levin explained that Elizabeth reigned with a fierceness that made her a model of what a powerful woman can be.
Carli Hendrix, an international studies major, said, ” We all know that Queen Elizabeth I was a great ruler, but this lecture really explained why and how she was. It also showed how she has influenced women to be powerful leaders.”
So can women rule? If we’ve learned anything from Queen Elizabeth I’s reign, yes they can.
Levin shared that we are starting to see a tradition of great female rulers, and how she hopes we can continue to see this tradition flourish.
]]>“Godspell” was composed in 1971 and made its Broadway debut in 1976. This musical tells the story of a group of people, including Jesus, retelling the Parables based on the Gospel of Matthew with a modern touch.
The theatre and performance program originally planned to showcase “Jesus Christ Superstar.” Due to there not being enough performers for all the roles, the program opted for “Godspell” instead, which was directed by Lisa L. Abbott.
Choosing to showcase “Godspell” with a smaller cast was a great decision. By doing this it made the show feel more intimate and allowed the audience to have an interactive role too.
The show opened with the theater company flooding through the audience dressed in all black singing the opening song “Tower of Babble”.
After the first song, the theater company transitions out of their black clothing into colorful outfits that favor trends from the 1970s and 80s. Like the clothes, the stage also transitioned from a dark and closed off area to a bright and peace sign filled set.
The fun and colorful set matched the tone and attitudes of the theater company. The company was led by Jacob Whitfield, the lead, who played Jesus in the production followed by his supporting character John/Judas who was played by Kian Micheal Devine.
The rest of the company also played an integral role in retelling the parables. With having a smaller cast the rest of the supporting characters were able to have a larger role in retelling the parables.
Each of the supporting characters was a standout as each was able to take lead in different songs retelling the parables. Whether it was a stunning ballad, “All Good Gifts,” preformed by Abraham, or fun and pop number “Light of the World,” performed by David Michael, the supporting characters were there to take you on a fun ride through the musical.
One thing that made Godspell so fun to watch was that the cast broke the “fourth wall” and had some fun making jokes about school and financial aid. This made the audience feel included and feel as if they had a part in this musical.
If you forgot to eat or are getting hungry throughout the first half of the musical, no need to worry. As Jesus nnounced the intermission, he offered the audience a snack of animal crackers and Kool-aid to hold them through the second act.
Overall, “Godspell” was a fun and exciting performance and experience that left the audience singing and dancing from their seat.
]]>It’s down to the final three girls on “The Bachelor,” which means it’s Fantasy Suite week. Each girl will finally get some real one-on-one time Peter, but there’s still drama brewing! So let’s get to it!
This episode picks up where the last one left off, with Madison pulling Peter aside to let him know there is something she’s been struggling with and that she has something to get off her chest. Instead of telling Peter about her strong faith and her decision to save herself for marriage, she tells him that it would be hard for her to stay if he decided to sleep with the other girls. But she’s not giving him an ultimatum. She leaves him with “actions speak louder than words.”
Let’s Get International for Fantasy Suites
The girls and Peter are headed “down under” to Gold Coast, Australia! Madison arrives to her hotel room first, then Hannah Ann joins, and then Victoria F. also comes in. That’s when it hits them. All three women have to stay in the same hotel suite during Fantasy Suite week. How convenient of “The Bachelor” producers to do this!
The First Overnight Date
The First Overnight/Fantasy Suite goes to Hannah Ann! The two had a pretty nice date. Nothing drama-filled happened, honestly. Just a good date. The two first rode jet skis and then had dinner. At dinner, Peter told Hannah Ann that her dad asked him to not say he was falling in love with her unless he was 100% sure, and Peter admitted he was.
After dinner, the two went up to the penthouse suite, where it is implied that they slept together.
While Peter and Hannah Ann are off enjoying the fantasy suite, Victoria and Madison are back at their shared suite. Thinking about what’s going on on this overnight date. Freaking out about what’s going on on their date.
The Second Overnight Date
Victoria F. is up next for her over-night date, leaving Hannah Ann and Madison alone together in their shared suite. Hannah Ann didn’t say much about what went down on her date, leaving Madison, as I imagine, stressed out over Peter’s actions.
Victoria F. and Peter’s date actually goes really well, too. Before they get into their date, Peter reassures Victoria that he trusts her and has her back. Peter ended up taking Victoria on a helicopter tour over Gold Coast.
At dinner, Peter and Victoria discuss their communication skills toward another (or Victoria’s lack thereof). Victoria admits that her rough communication skills stem from a past relationship where her partner never asked about her feelings. This was why she always got defensive whenever she was asked literally anything about her feelings.
Peter admits to her that this relationship has tested him the most throughout his journey as the bachelor, but it was worth it. They also end up sharing the fantasy suite.
Back at the hotel, Madison ends up telling Hannah Ann about her expressing concern over Peter sleeping with them (Hannah Ann and Victoria), and how it’s a make-or-break situation.
Hannah Ann didn’t respond to the comment face-to-face but said in her confessional that the statement was crazy because Madison knew what she was signing up for when she decided to be on the show.
The Third Overnight Date
It’s now time for Madison’s long-awaited date with Peter. For their date, Peter takes Madison to new heights. Literally. The two climb to the top of the tallest buildings in Gold Coast.
After their excursion to the top of the building, they safely make their way back down to the bottom, so they can go to dinner.
At dinner, Madison finally opens up about saving herself for marriage. She understands some people may not have made the same life decisions as her. Right there she also lets Peter know that she isn’t comfortable accepting a proposal from someone who has slept with another person just a week prior.
I am totally on Madison’s side, and I commend her for being honest with Peter about her expectations.
Peter is honest with Madison and lets her know that he was intimate with the other women. He then tells Madison that he does see them together in the end, but he also can see the other two with him at the end of this journey. Way to cheer Madison up, Peter!
Madison gets up and leaves dinner after saying he could lose her. Peter, of course, followed her and reiterates that he’s not perfect, but he could still see them together. He also admits that he knew his actions hurt her and that he’s sorry for it all.
Madison still ends up walking away from him, leaving just Peter to head to the fantasy suite alone.
We find out next week if Madison is gone for good or if she will look past Peter’s actions and fight for the final rose.
