The circuit will be showing the 306 Hollywood documentary this month with a Q&A session afterwards with the director/producer of the film.  The event starts at 7:30 p.m. at Sanford Hall in room 1002 on Feb. 25.

Bug

This  dark comedy is  about a waitress hiding from her ex-husband and her run in with a handsome stranger. The tickets are $6  for students and faculty and general admission is $12. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Black Box Theater on Feb. 27 – March 6.

Bouldering Night Out

This event is perfect for those who have always wanted to try rock climbing. It is open to beginners and for those who are advanced. With prizes being raffled off and free food for those at the event, it is a great event to bring your friends to hangout at. The event starts at 7 p.m. Recreation  Activity Center in the Bouldering cave on Feb. 28.

The Evolution of Black American Culture

A panel made up of professionals and students will be gathered together to discuss the evolution of Black American culture throughout the time.  The event starts at 6 p.m. in the Information Technology Building in room 1004 on Feb. 28.

Step into step: An look inside the RAC’s new Step and Sculpt class /step-into-step-an-look-inside-the-racs-new-step-and-sculpt-class/ /step-into-step-an-look-inside-the-racs-new-step-and-sculpt-class/#respond Wed, 20 Feb 2019 17:18:14 +0000 /?p=6875 Georgia Southern University’s Recreation Activity Center offers many group fitness classes already, but a new class, Step and Sculpt, was added for members to enjoy on Thursday nights.

The instructor, Joiya Reed, said that the class offers a full body workout in a fun way.  The class offers two different types of workouts in one class so that people can get the most out of their workout.

“I think the big difference with Step and Sculpt than other classes that we offer is that it’s choreographed to some extent, and then it’s like a combination of two modalities, so you’re getting that aerobics but you’re also getting weight lifting element as a part of it, so it’s kind of combining two workouts into one,” Reed said.

Reed became an instructor after training over the summer and started teaching the new step aerobics class in the fall. The class then became a step and sculpt class by adding together choreography and weight training, Reed said.

“This is going to sound really bias, but it’s a lot of fun, and I think the good thing about step is it gives students a different kind of workout than the norm,” Reed said. “Because when people think of step aerobics they think of jazzercise, leg warmers and a very tight leotard, but it’s like its a fun workout that you don’t realize you’re working out till later on in the class and you’re sweating.”

Many different moves and workout techniques were used in combination with upbeat music to help keep the students motivated throughout their workout. Throughout the class you could see many of the students smiling while they focused on their different workout sets.

“You know how you feel when you workout, you’re like ‘I feel good and energized,’ I feel good,” Lauren Chaves said. “ I feel like I was worked out but I still feel, like, not dead.”

Lauren Kiskunes said she thought that it was one of the best workouts she has ever had. Kiskunes is also an intern at the University Wellness Program and has taken other group fitness classes like cycling.

The Step and Sculpt class is offered once a week on Thursdays starting at 7:05 p.m. and lasts for about an hour.

2019 New Year Fitness Trends /2019-new-year-fitness-trends/ /2019-new-year-fitness-trends/#respond Thu, 24 Jan 2019 19:03:44 +0000 /?p=6660 As 2019 swings into full gear, many people are trying to find a way to be healthy and come up with new things to motivate them to keep their goals.

I talked with Gina Hogan, a personal fitness trainer at the RAC, about new year trends.

Group Classes:

Group classes have become increasingly popular because people can help relieve some of the anxiety of working out in a big open gym setting. These class are also a good way to meet new people or friends throughout the week. The Recreation Activity Center (RAC) at Georgia Southern offers many classes that students can take for free.

Hogan said a Step and Sculpt class will soon be offered at the RAC, which will be a mixture of a step class and resistance training.

Video Programs:

Video programs from places like Amazon have increased in popularity throughout the years. Those who have an Amazon Prime account can find many different instructional videos over yoga and many different types of fitness routines. Whatever platform you use to look at workout videos Hogan warns about looking at the trainers certifications.

“What makes a fantastic fitness program is if the workouts are attained to your schedule, your lifestyle, your stage in the fitness,” Hogan said.

Apps:

There are a variety of different apps you can choose from in the App Store for people to choose from. There are apps, like Today Habit tracker, that can send you alerts to help remind you to keep your workout goals and track your progress. The best thing is to do your research on these apps and find what will work for you.

MyFitnessPal is another app that you can download to your cell phone to try and help reach your fitness goals by helping you track your calories.

“At first, it will be difficult in getting into the habit because it takes some time getting used to it.  But, overall, super quick and easy to use,” Hogan said.

The Aaptiv app offers workout videos with motivational instructions to help push you.  Hogan said the app offers all sorts of workouts, whether you’re a beginner or advanced.

“The only downside to it is that it isn’t necessarily individualized towards you, but there are plenty of workouts to choose from in the app that can help achieve your goals,” Hogan said.

Smart Watches:

Smart watches have become a big trend and a helpful tool for those who want help with not only fitness but everyday lives as well.  Fitbit Blaze Smart Fitness has many different functions as well including GPS to help track routes and graphic instructions on workout moves to insure that they are done correctly.

Frozen Fruits/Veggies:

It can get expensive trying to buy fresh produce every week, but one of the ways you can still buy them is to shop in the frozen food section.  Frozen fruits and vegetables are far more cheaper to buy. They hold the same nutritional value, and they hold their freshness longer as well.

Side Note: Fresh fruits and vegetables can be used to make smoothies.


New fitness trends come and go, but they have the same result: they keep us healthy.  You should always find what works the best for you as an individual and your lifestyle.

Shake Your Tail Feathers

Another fun game to try is shake your tail feathers. All you need is an empty tissue box, some ribbon and torn up construction paper which goes inside the the box. The objective is to shake out all the construction paper from the tissue box, which is tied with ribbon around your waist.

“Broke Man” Heads Up

For those who are broke college students, the one thing many of us have plenty of are sticky notes, and these can be used for the “broke man” heads up. The only difference in this game is that everyone writes down on sticky notes an object or living thing for each other.

Mexican Train Domino Game

Mexican Train Domino Game was always a tradition in my house to help us all unwind from a big meal. The game has many different versions, so keep the rules you choose to go by on hand can help keep the fighting to a minimum.

 

With the holidays season upon us, there is nothing better than spending time with those you care for. Hopefully these games can help bring your loved ones closer and create memorable moments filled with nothing but smiles.

Weston House

According to a legend on The Haunted Places, Weston House, a dorm at the Savannah College of Art and Design, is a place where students are haunted by a woman singing and tapping on walls. Objects have been known to  move on their own, and people have claimed to feel a “ghost” touching them. This building was built on a Civil War Battlefield where many soldiers lost their lives.

Matthews Eatery

According to a legend on The Haunted Places, the B. Matthews Eatery, located in Savannah, Georgia, has sketchy past connections to the slave trade and racial shootings during the segregation. Knives have been found plunged into the floor and shakers have been thrown across the room. However, the ghosts have been harmless, according to The Haunted Places.

John Wesley Statue

According to a legend on The Haunted Places, in the Reynolds Square in Savannah Georgia, the John Wesley Statue resides in the same area where an old hospital used to burn the bodies of those who had passed away from malaria. It is believed that some of the patients weren’t fully deceased when they were burned according to The Haunted Places website. Orbs can be seen in photos taken of the statue.

Hay House

According to a legend on The Telegraph, The Hay House has been known as a historical landmark for the Macon, Georgia area, but it has also been known to have sightings of a strange mysterious woman in a white gown, strange sounds and moving objects. The woman who has been seen on multiple occasions by the staff at the Hay House is believed to be the original resident of Hay House.

Gravity Hill

A tale told in my hometown area In Bonaire, Georgia revolves around a hill. Just a little past the intersection of US Route 129 lies a hill where your car will be pulled up on it while the car is in neutral. It was said that the witch whose grave marks the top of the hill will help drivers get over the hill in return for the kindness that was shown to her in her life.

 

These are just a few legends in Southeast Georgia to put you in the Halloween spirit for this season.

If you find yourself low on funds but still wanting to join in the Halloween fun, here are two Halloween looks that you can do for a very low price.

 

Products Used:

The products were purchased from Walmart. 

Skeleton

You will need to start off with white and black face paint, which can be bought at Walmart for around a $1 a piece. An elf foundation brush works the best to apply an even layer of the paint across the surface area of your face.  

You will first need to squirt a small amount of white face paint onto a plate. You will then use the paint to highlight your cheekbones, forehead, chin and jawline. You will need to apply more than one layer of the white paint.

Once you have finished applying this, take the black paint and draw a curved line under your cheekbone down to the edge of your lip. You will then need to blend the black into the edge of the white. You will then use this same technique by outlining your hairline and blending it as well.

Add the teeth around your lips with the black paint.

Finally, add a white stripe down your nose and two black triangles on the tip of your nose. You can go back in to add colorful dots and flowers on your forehead.

Mermaid

For this project, you will need to buy blue and purple face paint, which you can get at  Walmart for around $1 a piece.

You can start off by putting on your normal daily makeup. After this, take a sponge a sponge and dab the blue face paint around your forehead and along your high cheekbone. Once you have finished, let the paint dry before getting ready to add the purple scales.

After the blue paint has dried, take a small eye shadow brush or concealer brush to create little purple diamonds along the small path of the blue paint. Once the paint dries, take a highlighter of your choice to run along the scales to make them shine.

 

 

Halloween looks can get expensive, but you can easily do these looks for around $2 each. Whether you decide to be a spooky skeleton or an alluring mermaid, these looks are fun and affordable.

It may not be easy at first to build up your confidence, but don’t get discouraged. With time, along with trial and error, you will start to notice a change in how you view yourself as a person.

Just Breathe

It can be a little nerve-racking when you start to think about how they might reject you, but taking a deep breath can help to ease those nerves. The worst thing anyone can say is no.

Guys don’t always make the first move, but you can. This is why building up your confidence is great because it will help to give you courage. Nothing gained, nothing lost, right?

 

How to gain more confidence always depends on what a person is like as an individual, so try different things until you find what works for you.

1 banana

Mix the ingredients together in a bowl until they become a liquid. After the mixture is done, you may add it to your hair (make sure to soak the ends). Leave the mixture in for about 15 minutes and then rinse it out thoroughly.

 

Shine and Condition

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon

1 cup of coconut milk

1 egg

Place all ingredients into a bowl and mix together until it becomes a creamy looking liquid. Once this is done, add the mixture to your hair over a sink. Let it sit for 15 minutes and then wash it out thoroughly with cold water.

 

Depending on your hair type, you may only feel the difference (instead of seeing one), but both of these hair masks are sure to help nurture your luscious locks.
