We want to help. Here are some insider tips on how to make the most out of a day at Georgia Southern.

  1. Listen to your advisor!

Your academic advisor is there for you. They will know what is best for you and what the best courses will be for you to take your freshman year. Don’t be afraid to ask for a meeting with them outside of the required ones! The academic advisors at GS are amazing at their job, and they are more than happy to help.

  1. Give yourself AT LEAST 15 minutes between classes.

It takes roughly 15 minutes to get from one side of campus to the other while walking.

The buses can be a good option, but there is no telling if they’ll be at the right place at the perfect time for you.

  1. Make time for breaks.

Some people prefer back-to-back classes to get them all out of the way earlier, but it is still important to squeeze some time in for little breaks here and there. Schedule some time for lunch as well so that you can run into Lakeside or Starbucks and grab something to eat to give your brain the fuel it needs! if you have an one+ hour break, the fourth floor of the library is a great place to “rest your eyes” (but you didn’t hear it from me).

  1. Do your research.

The typical course load of a freshmen includes the CORE classes, such as Composition, Biology and History. This doesn’t mean you don’t have to do any research! Ratemyprofessor.com is a great website to get some insight on a professor’s teaching style to see if it would be a good match for you. Take the ratings with a grain of salt though since students tend to leave bad ones more often than good ones.

  1. Register on time.

Classes fill up fast in college, that’s for sure. Always register for classes the second your registration time opens because classes fill up fast.

College means coming into a whole new world and something as small as picking classes can be a scary thing to conquer. Hopefully, this inside scoop can help you make the most out of your time at college!

Here are five perfect movie marathon ideas /here-are-five-perfect-movie-marathon-ideas/ /here-are-five-perfect-movie-marathon-ideas/#respond Mon, 20 Apr 2020 19:00:15 +0000 /?p=8934 We’ve all found ourselves with a lot of extra time on our hands recently. Even with online school still continuing, you might find yourself with no menial tasks to do around the house anymore.

Here is the ultimate movie marathon list that you can watch all from the safety and comfort from your own home.

1. Harry Potter

This 19 hour and eight movie-long marathon is a great place to start. Even if you are re-watching them for ole time’s sake or watching them for the first time (where have you been?), you’re sure to love them.

2. Marvel Cinematic Universe

Trust me, this universe goes far beyond your classic Iron Man, Thor and Captain America. This movie franchise expands over more than 42 hours of running time and a whopping 23 movies. Yes, you read that right. Twenty. Three. Make sure you take a break (or several) during this marathon.

3. Star Wars

When it comes to Star Wars you are either a die-hard fan or don’t care for them at all, and quarantine is the perfect time for you to decide. With nine movies divided up into prequels, the original trilogy and the most recent sequels, you are sure to have enough content on your hands.

4. Jurassic Park

With five films out now and a 6th on the way set to release in 2021, this marathon gives you something to look forward to. With classic characters, amazing special effects (for the time) and dinosaurs, what more could you ask for?

5. The Fast and Furious

With nine films in this extended franchise, the action and adrenaline packed scenes are sure to get your blood pumping. With more films on the horizon, don’t be hesitant to start now while you’ve got the time.

With all this extra time on our hands, we might as well jump into the movie marathon spirit (if you haven’t already like I have).

Doing School Work From Home: Tips to Help You Succeed /doing-school-work-from-home-tips-to-help-you-succeed/ /doing-school-work-from-home-tips-to-help-you-succeed/#respond Fri, 10 Apr 2020 18:41:13 +0000 /?p=8874 College students across world have suddenly had their daily schedule thrown through a loop due to COVID-19 recently. With classes for the remainder of the Spring 2020 term and Summer 2020 going digital for GS, it can be hard to learn new study and work habits. These are some tips to make the transition a little easier for you.

1. Get a good night’s sleep

First and foremost, sleep. Being sent home from campus can feel like you are on an earlier summer break, so you might tend to stay up later and in turn wake up past noon. Personally, I am trying to break the habit of staying up until four a.m. every night watching “Criminal Minds.” If you are already in the habit of staying up through the night, try and force yourself to wake up and stay up a little earlier every day. And waking up and lounging in bed for hours doesn’t count! Go eat some breakfast, take a shower or even go for a morning walk/jog.

2. Find a time that works best for you

Everyone has different study techniques and only you can know what works best for you. Some night owls tend to crack open the books during the night so that leaves their day for doing whatever they want, while others might be the opposite. Choose the time of day/night where you have the highest energy level and when you feel the most productive. Don’t study right after you wake up or right before you’re about to go to sleep. Give your brain time to chill!

3. Separate work from play

One of the “cardinal rules” of studying at home is to never study in your bed! Try and find a space in your house, like the kitchen table or a desk, to study. It’s best to reserve your bed for only sleeping because it can be easy to fall into a nap if you are somewhere comfortable.

4. Give yourself breaks

No one can study for eight hours straight and remain sane after. It’s important to give yourself breaks so you can give your brain time to recharge a little. But it is also important to limit the length of the breaks and how frequently you take them. You can divide the time and frequency differently according to your own personal study habits, but don’t pull the age old trick of “Well, the end time for my break is already past so I’ll just put it off a little while longer.”

5. Use online resources

It’s easy to feel cut off from the world when you have suddenly become an online student, but GS has provided online resources you can access via your MyGeorgiaSouthern page. Beside those there are endless other ways to vary the ways you study. YouTube videos, such as CrashCourse, can help you summarize subjects that go into college-level detail.

It may take a while to jump back into a school schedule due to COVID-19, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to! These tips can help you get back on track and to make to the most out of a bad situation.

How to do St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah, the right way. /how-to-do-st-patricks-day-in-savannah-the-right-way/ /how-to-do-st-patricks-day-in-savannah-the-right-way/#respond Thu, 12 Mar 2020 16:06:41 +0000 /?p=8688 For 2020, the St. Patrick’s Day parade has been delayed.

Savannah’s iconic St. Patrick’s Day parade and celebrations are world famous, consistently being listed in the top 10 best St. Patrick’s Day destinations. As someone who has made the pilgrimage onto the cobblestone streets before sun rise for the past 5 years, there are definitely right and wrong ways to conquer St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah, Georgia.

Actually going for the parade?

If you are one of the people that are trekking to Savannah purely for the fun of the parade, there are a few things you should know.

Get there early! And I mean early. To scope out a good parade watching spot, I recommended looking at the official parade route map, which can be found on Savannah.com. There are spots along the route that have bleachers set up, and you can rent them from the city, but it’s honestly easier and more comfortable to bring your own chair.

Regarding when to arrive, I have gotten there before sunrise to snag a good spot, hopefully by a public restroom (which is hard to come by in Savannah). The earlier you arrive, the better. At some point, streets start getting blocked off to prepare for the route, so parking becomes more and more limited as the morning goes on.

If you can stomach it, wake up at the crack of dawn to get a good spot and bring a comfortable chair. You’re going to be sitting down for a while.

Wanna drink a little (or maybe a lot)?

Drinking alcohol and St. Patrick’s day go hand in hand, and Savannah is no exception. Savannah has a unique open container law, allowing patrons to carry open containers of alcohol, as long as they are in plastic, 16-ounce cup (not bottles, mugs or flasks) and must remain in the parameters of the Historic District. The Historic District encompasses the area from River Street to Jones Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard to West Broad Street.

On St. Patrick’s Day, this rule is taken well advantage of. During the celebrations, a wristband policy is put into place. Wristbands must be worn by those who wish to carry open beverages and drink outside of establishments, so that they are easily identifiable.

Wristbands must be worn in the control zone, also dubbed “party central.” The control zone spans from East Broad Street to MLK Boulevard and the Savannah River to Broughton Street, west of Drayton Street. To the east of Drayton Street, the control zone is only from Bay Street to the Savannah River.

The wristbands are color-coded for each day, so you must get a new one if you are attending multiple days. Wristbands were $10 a day in 2019 and were sold at multiple access points in the downtown area. You must to be at least 21 to purchase a wristband.

You must be at least 21+ to drink alcoholic beverages.

Don’t know what to wear?

Obviously, something green! There is no need to try and be that “cool guy who doesn’t wear green.” Participate in the festivities! Stores are selling St. Patrick’s Day themed shirts, pants and hats basically a month before, and if you cant snag one of those, there’s always the option of green beads you can wear.

Also, be prepared for all types of weather. Lately, it has been rainy in Savannah and a surprisingly windy and cold back end of winter, so it’s a smart idea to dress in something comfortable and something that can help you out if it rains, gets hot and humid or cold.

Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah has become a longstanding tradition for locals and people who come from all over the country. Follow these tips to make sure you can have the luck of the Irish to make the most of out this holiday.

Bachelor Recap: Season 24, Ep. 10 /bachelor-recap-season-24-ep-10/ /bachelor-recap-season-24-ep-10/#respond Wed, 11 Mar 2020 16:20:24 +0000 /?p=8676 It’s Women Tell All Time!

It’s finally time to see if the girls can come to some kind of understanding and put this crazy drama behind them, but, of course, we don’t get to see that come to fruition.

Tammy, who has long standing “beef” with Kelsey and essentially everyone in the house, did not apologize on-air to Kelsey, who she accused of being an alcoholic, popping pills, and emotionally shaming her when the two were in the Bachelor Mansion together.

We also finally get to actually hear from Victoria F. herself about those allegations from the mysterious woman who accused her of breaking up multiple relationships. Victoria F., of course, denies these allegations with her signature crying face.

But, to Victoria F.’s credit, she was one of the few women to keep her composure and not act catty on stage towards the other women.

So, who were the missing ones?

If you were paying attention, you might have noticed how two girls who, in my opinion, played at least some sort of important/pivotal role this season.

Kelley and Natasha!

While information about why Natasha wasn’t on Women Tell All is little (she was asked to attend, but couldn’t), we do have a little more information as to why Kelley wasn’t on stage.

Kelley, who was a fan favorite, wasn’t invited back to WTA. Chris Harrison said to the podcast “Almost Famous,” that they didn’t feel as though Kelley played an integral part to the storyline.

Which is confusing, because Kelley is actually a recognizable face and made is considerably far in the game, unlike some women on the stage that returned for WTA but also went home on the first night.

So, I’m guessing Kelley was bad for ratings, for whatever reason, and wasn’t offered a chair on stage for that reason.

So, let’s talk about how Madison accepted Peter’s rose.

After last week’s fiasco of Madison leaving after dinner during Peter and her Fantasy Suite date after learning Peter has been intimate with other women, (i.e. Hannah Ann and Victoria F.) Madison decides to make an appearance at the Rose Ceremony.

Peter seemed more nervous than usual following this Rose Ceremony but wound up giving the first rose to Hannah Ann.

Cue dramatic music.

Okay, so obviously he chose Madison. I think we all saw that coming,

But how she accepts the rose is what has got some people talking. She hesitates. Peter says her name and, even when Peter asks her to accept the rose, Madison waits an uncomfortable amount of time.

She eventually says yes, and Peter even goes as far to ask “Are you sure?” to which she says yes and they hug.

This leaves Victoria F. to be the one getting into a limo and being sent home, which in my opinion is fantastic.

On March 9th, the Final Rose Ceremony will air and Bachelor Nation will finally get to see all the drama come to an end.

Who will Peter choose? Who is his mom talking about in the clip they have teased us with all season about bringing “her” home?

Bachelor Recap: Season 24, Ep. 8 /bachelor-recap-season-24-ep-8/ /bachelor-recap-season-24-ep-8/#respond Tue, 25 Feb 2020 16:34:25 +0000 /?p=8496 It’s finally time for hometown dates!! This long awaited episode rivals the Final Rose Ceremony episode in anticipation.

We get to see if the girls families approve of Peter’s relationship with them and how they react to seeing their family for the first time

Hannah Ann

Hannah Ann got the first hometown date! The pair meet up in Hannah Ann’s hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee. Instead of taking the emotional and dramatic date route, Hannah Ann opts for a fun one!

She takes Peter axe-throwing, as an homage to her father who is in the lumber business. They are both hilarious bad at it, but Hannah Ann does happen to nail a bull’s-eye. After the date winds down, Peter decides to show Hannah Ann a list of reasons he is falling for her, which is a callback to when Hannah Ann did the same for him on one of their previous one-on-one dates.

Now, the time has come for Peter to meet her family.

As is typical for a hometown, everyone starts crying as soon as they see Hannah Ann. Tears are flowing so hard that you would think Hannah Ann is returning from war, even though she has been gone for a max of two months.

Hannah Ann’s dad, along with every dad in Bachelor history, expresses his concern about how Peter is dating other women the same time as his daughter. Which is, like, the whole point of the show.

The rest of the night seemingly goes off without a hitch, with more tears and a heartfelt moment between Hannah Ann and her sister.

During Peter’s farewell, he admits he is falling for Hannah Ann and asks her to stay that she loves him over and over again in a rather steamy send off.

It’s Kelsey’s turn!

Coming in at second in line for hometown dates is Kelsey! Kelsey takes Peter to Des Moines, Iowa.

Kelsey chooses to make their own wine, the two stomping on some grapes.

After the messy part, the pair make their own wine in a winery, which c’mon, Kelsey, didn’t you get accused of being an alcoholic? The Devil works hard, but the Bachelor producers work harder. They name the red wine blend they created after themselves, which is extremely original.

Kelsey and Peters evening with her parents go well, no major drama happening. Kelsey even drops the “I love you,” which goes uncomfortably reciprocated by Peter telling her he appreciates it.

As most families are, Kelsey’s parents are worried about Kelsey getting her heartbroken by Peter. During a conversation with her step-dad Mike, she confides in him about how getting her heart broken is her biggest fear–while on the other hand, she tells her sisters she would say yes if Peter proposed. Kelsey’s mother, Beth, warns Peter not to break Kelsey’s heart.

Time for Madison’s date!

War eagle! Madison takes Peter to her hometown turn college town of Auburn, Alabama. She has very strong ties to Auburn, as her dad works in the basketball department.

The two take things to the court to shoot a few hoops. They seemingly have the entire stadium to themselves until a surprise visit from Auburn University’s men’s basketball head coach Bruce Pearl! He takes them through some drills, and Madison is hilariously better than Peter.

After some more alone time, the two are headed to Madison’s house to meet the family.

Something that has been hinted at in previous episodes takes the center plot point once Madison reconnects with her family: Madison is saving herself for marriage. This doesn’t come as a huge surprise to us, as she has been mentioning her faith more and more during the season.

Madison’s mother asks her in an emotional moment if Madison has told Peter this, which she admits that she has not. During this same time, Peter is having a conversation with Madison’s dad about, guess who, his daughter.

Peter confesses to Madison’s dad, Chad that he is definitely falling in love with Madison. This can almost be seen as a super sweet moment between Chad and Peter, until Chad responds with asking Peter if he is sure that Madison is really “the one,” to which Peter can’t answer. This clearly makes them both feel uncomfortable.

Last but not least, Victoria F.!

If you haven’t noticed, all of the hometown dates have gone off without a hitch, just the usual conversations between the contestants and their family and ones with Peter.

They saved the best for last.

Victoria’s hometown date starts out innocent enough with the two connecting in Virginia Beach. They stroll on the beach, with Victoria’s dog and all seems well.

They take this chance to re-do their live concert date with a performance by Hunter Hayes, who Victoria has NOT dated. This makes it a little easier for the pair to have a good time, both happily singing along to “I Want Crazy.” (Foreshadowing much?)

After the two say their goodbyes to get ready for the meeting the family portion, Peter spots one of his exes who just happens to be there and just happens to also be completely mic’d up.

Turns out she knows Victoria and has come on the show to warn Peter about who she really is! She explains that Victoria is known to have broken up multiple relationships and warns him to be careful.

Once Peter gets to Victoria’s house, he is clearly upset about the conversation he had with his ex and wants to talk to Victoria about it before meeting her family. The two take a seat on the front steps, and the drama begins.

Things go down hill very fast, with Victoria quickly turning the blame onto Peter and talks about how there is always drama. She even lets it slip that she doesn’t want to do this anymore and “just, like, can’t!” Very typical for Victoria.

She runs off into the night, yelling at camera crew to leave her alone. Peter has to take time to himself to get his thoughts together. At this point, Peter doesn’t even go inside to meet her family. He gets into a black SUV and they go their separate ways.

After all the drama of their hometown date and everything that has happened prior in the season, Victoria F. is bound to go home at the Rose Ceremony, right?

The Rose Ceremony

The next day, Victoria goes to Peter’s hotel room to clear the air between them. Peter says he’s not ready to give up on this just yet but worries that they may not have what it takes to make this work, ignoring the million red flags Victoria F. has waved in his face.

It’s time for the Rose Ceremony.

Hannah Ann and Madison obviously get a rose, leaving the final rose to be given between Kelsey and Victoria F. It’s no secret that most people are rooting for Kelsey, seeming as Victoria F. said herself she doesn’t want to do this anymore.

But, the Bachelor being the Bachelor, Peter gives the final rose to Victoria F., leaving Kelsey to be sent home.

This comes as a huge shock to those watching and to Kelsey herself. Peter walks Kelsey out, and they say goodbye.

So that’s the end of the episode right? Wrong!

We are left on a cliffhanger, as Madison asks to speak with Peter after the Rose Ceremony, supposedly to talk about her faith and how she’s saving herself for marriage.

After all, fantasy suite week is next!

Tips for the Young Professional /tips-for-the-young-professional/ /tips-for-the-young-professional/#respond Thu, 20 Feb 2020 16:47:48 +0000 /?p=8451 “You won’t be treated like this in the real world!” We’ve all heard this infamous quote at one point in our lives. Whether it was in high school from a teacher who seemed to be always working against you or your mom or dad when you won’t do your own laundry. Entering the “real world” is a scary thing to conquer, and, as your college career continues and comes to a close, here are some tips on how to be a successful young adult in the professional world.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help/advice.

There is not a single CEO out there that got where they are today without asking for even a little help along the way. Finding someone you can look up to in the field you are pursuing a career in is crucial. It could be someone famous or someone you know personally. They can be the person you turn to for help when you are struggling. Don’t forget that they were once in your shoes, too.

Don’t be discouraged by the menial tasks or jobs.

It is rare to get a dream job coming right out of college, so don’t be scared to take a job that isn’t particularly in your “five-year plan.” Success is like a ladder: you have to climb to reach the top. So, just because you’re the coffee-grabbing intern after graduation, don’t get disheartened.

Don’t be afraid to speak up.

Just because you are just starting your professional career doesn’t mean you don’t have a voice. Your opinion matters, and companies will be expecting you to be bringing something new to the table as a new hire. Speak up! You might have the next greatest thing hidden in your mind.

Use every situation as a learning experience.

No one should ever stop learning, even after college. It’s important to always be looking for new learning opportunities and find the opportunities in unexpected places. Also, don’t let setbacks or “failures” slip by you and not learn anything from them. As Master Yoda once said, “The greatest teacher, failure is.”

The event had an unexpected twist: a gameshow.

Dr. Kendra R. Parker, assistant professor of African American literature, Ph.D, hosted the first event of many at GS during Black History Month. Parker teaches courses both at the Armstrong and Statesboro campuses.

The format of the event, a Kahoot gameshow questionnaire, was innovative and effective at getting the crowd involved.

“I didn’t want to come up here and lecture at you, I want to have a conversation with you,” said Parker.

The game included questions revolving around historical African American figures and historical African American moments from before Reconstruction to 2020. Categories included Freedom Fighters, Movers, Shakers & Innovators, Black Intellectual Traditions, Our Entertainers, Black Love and Black Writers.

“I wanted to start with black people’s pursuit of freedom during enslavement … and I think it’s important to embrace the spirit of looking back to look forward because you can’t really know where you’re going unless you know where you’re coming from,” said Parker.

Jazmine Murphy, a history major, attended the event and found it enlightening.

“Dr. Parker included things that we didn’t already know and included some of the things we did already know,” Murphy said.

Murphy added that the different format, a gameshow style, brought everyone together and made it fun.

Another among those also in attendance was Director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs Takeshia Brown. She explains that the event impacted her in several ways.

“I think it’s important to celebrate and learn about cultural groups, and as African American, it was great to kind of hear and re-learn some things that I haven’t heard in a long time and also do it in an atmosphere with students that was relaxing and not intimidating.”
